Balance ("we", "our", or "us") is a mobile application designed to help couples measure, visualise, and discuss the distribution of mental load and household tasks. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

1. Data We Collect

When you create an account and use Balance, we collect:

Account information – your email address and the password you choose (stored securely via Firebase Authentication).
Profile information – your display name, your partner's name, an avatar emoji, and whether your household includes children or pets.
Assessment & check-in answers – your responses to the mental-load questionnaire and weekly check-ins (stored as structured records linked to your account).
Partner invitation – the email address you enter to invite your partner. This email is used solely to send the invitation and link the two accounts.

We do not collect location data, contacts, camera or microphone access, health data, or payment information.

2. How We Use Your Data

To create and authenticate your account.
To store and display your assessment and check-in results within the app.
To compare results with your partner's answers and surface a perception-gap summary.
To send a weekly summary email to your partner when you choose to share one.
To improve the app experience based on aggregated, anonymised usage patterns.

3. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. Your data is shared only in the following limited circumstances:

With your partner – answers are shared with the other member of your household account so you can view each other's results.
Firebase (Google) – we use Google Firebase for authentication and cloud storage. Data is processed in accordance with Firebase's privacy practices.
Legal obligation – we may disclose data if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.

4. Data Retention

Your data is retained for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data and all associated records will be permanently deleted within 30 days.

5. Security

We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted data transmission (TLS) and Firebase's built-in security rules. Passwords are never stored in plain text. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we strive to protect your data using commercially acceptable means.

6. Children's Privacy

Balance is intended for adults (18+). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you.
Request correction of inaccurate data.
Request deletion of your account and all associated data.
Withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
